Compatibility

Can you watch IPTV directly on a Smart TV?

Many modern Smart TVs can run a compatible IPTV player app directly. The exact setup depends on the TV’s operating system and the apps available in its built-in app store. TVs running Android TV or Google TV normally provide the widest app choice, while Samsung and LG televisions use their own app stores and may offer a more limited selection of compatible players.

An older Smart TV may still work perfectly for streaming even when it cannot install the required app directly. In that situation, an Android TV box, Fire TV device or another compatible streaming stick can add newer app support without replacing the television.

TV types

Common Smart TV systems and setup options

Check your television’s app store and operating system before choosing an app.

01

Android TV or Google TV

These televisions usually include the Google Play Store and offer the widest choice of compatible IPTV player apps.

02

Samsung Smart TV

Samsung televisions use the Tizen operating system. Compatible players must be available through the Samsung app store.

03

LG Smart TV

LG televisions use webOS. App availability depends on the TV model, region and the current LG Content Store selection.

04

Older or unsupported TV

Add an Android box, Fire TV device or compatible streaming stick when the television cannot install a suitable player.

Before setup

What you need before installing an IPTV app

  • A compatible Smart TV, Android box, Fire TV device or streaming stick.
  • A stable internet connection. We recommend at least 15mbps, although line stability is more important than headline speed alone.
  • Access to the television’s app store or a compatible external streaming device.
  • Your login or playlist information, which is supplied after your trial or package request is approved.
  • A wired Ethernet connection where possible, or a strong and stable Wi-Fi signal near the television.

Before installing anything, check the exact TV model and operating system. Two televisions from the same manufacturer can have different app availability, especially when they were released in different years.

Google Play Store TVs

Basic setup for Android TV or Google TV

STEP 01

Open the Google Play Store

Use the television remote to open the Play Store and confirm that the TV is connected to the internet.

STEP 02

Install a compatible player

Search for the player recommended in your setup email and install it directly on the television.

STEP 03

Enter the supplied details

Open the app and enter the login or playlist information exactly as provided by support.

STEP 04

Allow the first update to finish

The app may need time to load channels, categories and VOD information before everything appears.

Other Smart TVs

What if your Smart TV has no Google Play Store?

Samsung, LG and some other Smart TVs use their own app stores rather than Google Play. First search the television’s built-in store for a compatible IPTV player. App availability can vary by model, country and software version, so the exact player may not be the same on every television.

If no suitable app is available, the simplest solution is normally to connect a compatible Android box, Fire TV device or streaming stick through an HDMI port. Read our Fire TV and Android Box setup guide for device comparison, installation steps and troubleshooting. An external device can give the TV access to a newer app platform and may improve navigation on older television models.

Choosing a device

Smart TV app or external streaming device?

Use the Smart TV app when

  • The television has a compatible and reliable player.
  • The app responds quickly and receives updates.
  • Your Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection is stable.
  • You want the simplest setup with one remote.

Use an external device when

  • The TV app store does not offer a suitable player.
  • The television is older or navigation feels slow.
  • You want more app choice or easier app updates.
  • You plan to move the streaming setup between televisions.

Connection quality

How to improve IPTV streaming on a Smart TV

A fast speed-test result does not always mean that the connection is stable. Buffering may be caused by weak Wi-Fi, packet loss, router congestion, high latency or other devices using the connection heavily at the same time.

  • Use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi when the television is close enough to the router.
  • If using Wi-Fi, place the router where the signal is not blocked by thick walls or furniture.
  • Restart the television, router and streaming app when performance changes unexpectedly.
  • Avoid large downloads, cloud backups or game updates while streaming.
  • Test the same account on a phone using Wi-Fi and mobile data to help identify whether the problem is the device, home network or internet connection.

Smart TV FAQ

Common Smart TV setup questions

Does every Smart TV support IPTV apps?

No. App support depends on the television’s operating system, model, region and app store. An external streaming device can be used when the TV cannot install a suitable app.

Is Android TV the same as a normal Smart TV?

Android TV and Google TV are Smart TV platforms that include access to the Google Play Store. Other Smart TVs may use systems such as Samsung Tizen or LG webOS.

Do I need an Android box if my television is already smart?

Not necessarily. If the television supports a reliable compatible player, you can normally use the TV directly. An external device is useful when app choice or TV performance is limited.

What internet speed is recommended?

We recommend at least 15mbps, but a stable connection with low packet loss and good Wi-Fi or Ethernet performance is more important than speed alone.

Can support help me choose the correct app?

Yes. Provide the television brand, model and whether it has the Google Play Store when submitting your request. Support will send the appropriate setup information by email.
